Every Fish Tested in the Yamuna Contained Microplastics. What Does That Mean for Us?

What are Microplastics?

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 millimetres, created when larger plastic items such as bottles, bags, synthetic fabrics, tyres, and packaging gradually break down. Because of their tiny size, they are almost impossible to remove from rivers and lakes once they enter the ecosystem.

Fish mistake these particles for food, allowing plastics to accumulate inside their digestive systems and tissues. When humans consume contaminated seafood, the plastics may also enter our bodies. Researchers continue to study the long-term health impacts, but the findings are increasingly concerning.
